History
The Bellachat refuge was built on the ruins of an old mountain pasture (some of which are still visible in the surrounding area).
Around 1920, the chalet was used as an inn for day-trippers and muleteers. Unfortunately, it was completely destroyed, first by fire in 1945-50, and then again by the violent storm of 1962.
In 1977, Georges Balmat wanted to rebuild a building on the same site. He then chose to design a chalet entirely out of wood, the construction of which was completed in 1983.
Since then, the refuge has undergone numerous improvements, including the installation of a cellar for storing food, a bathroom, and a terrace. In April 2014, a snow slide partially destroyed the cellar and completely destroyed the bathroom, which had to be rebuilt.
In 2016, 4 solar panels were installed on the roof of the refuge, thus improving the comfort of hikers.
